There is a sneaky HiFi manufacturer from China that has always pushed the boundaries of affordable HiFi year after year. There is something that draws my attention to Topping and their deeds. Maybe it’s their no-BS approach to marketing, their straightforward user manuals that include detailed measurements, their audio performance and affordable price tags or… maybe all of the above just makes you love them and recommend them. Their D/A converters are still top rated, making them one of the biggest hits in Hi-Fi communities around the world. Without Topping, we probably wouldn’t have tough competition, and we’d still think that paying more than $1,000 for a DAC, headphones, or integrated amp would be mandatory for better sound.

In recent years, Topping has fully revamped its arsenal with new equipment from peanut-priced Hi-Fi to affordable and then high-performance audio. Their entire range was updated with fresh new electronics, with the exception of integrated and power amplifiers, which were still lagging behind.
After exchanging a few emails and explaining what was important to the 21st century audiophile, things quickly escalated as three integrated amplifiers were released from the Topping house in less than a year. The PA3S, PA5 and MX5 were paving the way for the storm brewing on the horizon, but their entire portfolio was still missing a single flagship. Something that would look and function in a similar way to their top of the line D90SE and PRE90 units. After a troubled design phase and a long development time, it was time to reveal their flagship integrated/power amplifier, simply called the LA90.
The LA90 follows the rest of the 90 series down to the last detail, reeking of bad attitude and carrying plenty of power on its belt, all housed in a nicely crafted unibody case. Today, I’m going to turn my attention to their best performance / integrated amplifier, which costs $899. Can Topping deliver a similar performance to the rest of the 90 series or will it fall behind and be forgotten? All will be revealed soon. In typical (exaggerated) fashion, I’m going to go deep down the rabbit hole and compare it to my everyday amplifier, the Benchmark AHB2, in the latest chapters of this review. Be sure to check it out, and before that happens, let’s unbox this bad boy.
The box in the box is exactly how the LA90 arrived at my front door, the usual look that should protect the unit well in transit. Like all topping units before it, the LA90 is protected by layers of foam all around, ensuring it arrives at your front door safe and sound. Topping has always provided detailed measurements for their devices, done by one of the nicest audio analyzers out there, and I’ve always liked that. From frequency response, full harmonic distortion, to FFT spectrum and multi-tone tests, you can find everything in its user manual. In addition to the unit itself, you’ll find a jump-start cable (in case you want to use it as a mono amp), an external 256-watt switching power supply, a power cord, a user manual, and a warranty. a card that also serves as a product catalog.

Topping describes it as an ultra high-performance power amplifier, but it can also function as an integrated amplifier, controlling the output power using the volume wheel located on the front panel. As a separate integrated amplifier, only the remote control is missing in the package.
Even though it looks plain and simple, I really like its minimalist case. It follows the same design elements of their flagships like the D90SE, A90 and PRE90. You’re looking at a unibody case that’s been cut from a single block of aluminum, with two metal plates attached to the back and front, and two aluminum heatsinks attached to the sides to improve heat dissipation. Thanks to side fins for heat dissipation, the LA90 runs cool at idle and stays cool under most load conditions. It can get a little warm under heavy load, but it was never hot under any circumstances.
The front plate is much thicker, which is common practice in the Hi-Fi world to eliminate wireless interference. The entire body has rounded corners and smooth lines, so you won’t cut yourself or damage your precious equipment when handling it. I don’t see the screws around it, adding some sexiness to the whole thing. The CNC milled faceplate features only one On/Off/Input Selector button and several low intensity LEDs will indicate the selected analog input. Under it are four rubber feet; placed in perfectly cut round spaces, these will not move when rearranged on your stand. You can have it in either matte black (my review unit) or matte silver, and either way it has a higher WAF because there’s only one low intensity LED when the unit is on. Weighing approximately ~2.75kg (~6lbs) and measuring 220cm wide, 205mm deep and 90mm high, the LA90 is just the right size for use in tight spaces.
The amp is small in size, smaller than the KECES S300 and S125 units, much smaller than my former Kinki Studio EX-M7, Hegel H190 and Cambridge Audio Azur 851A, and slightly smaller than my everyday Benchmark AHB2 amp. Because it is so small and compact, you can integrate it into tiny stands and small Hi-Fi systems, and you will see that the IKEA BESTA TV stand can accommodate two LA90 units on one shelf. All in all, the LA90 looks like a huge space saver, which I can’t say about my former amps.
