Crafting Relaxing Meditation Spaces – Our new home My husband and I have been working on together for the past two years. With only two bedrooms and limited space in our small house, the second bedroom was the obvious choice for my rest room. Thankfully, the place feels nice and is not a high traffic area so it doesn’t disturb my relaxing time.
Your rest room, however, can be anywhere in the house you feel most comfortable. My resting place is a spare bedroom converted into my home office. My friend’s room has her resting place. Your space can be big or small. The only requirement is that it is not a highly trafficked and relaxed place.
Crafting Relaxing Meditation Spaces
I love earth tones. Browns, blues and greens are my favorite combinations of colors to put in a room. Colors are very soothing to me and help me relax.

That’s why I chose to use all those wonderful earth tones in my own living room. It is a color expression of what I want my soul to feel as I do this letting go.
Your space should speak to you equally. Often, relaxing spaces are soft tones like beige, pale pink, white and gray, but it’s really up to you which color gives you the most comfort. For you, black walls with soft lighting and gold accents will put you in the mood to let go and relax. As long as it inspires you to relax, pick the color you want!
Comfort is the most important part of any relaxing space. My relaxation room offers a place to read, meditate, make crafts, play music or just sit in silence. Furniture or pieces in my space were chosen according to their use.
For example, I use my space for meditation, yoga, reading and crafts. To do all these activities comfortably I bought a big fluffy floor pillow, a comfortable yoga mat, a small sofa and a table that I can use while sitting comfortably on the sofa. All these elements make my experience in my relaxation room very pleasant.
Essential Items To Create A Peaceful Meditation Nook At Home
For a small room, like my friend’s closet, buy a colorful floor rug with comfy pillows to sit on while you enjoy the space. Regardless of size, it should still be comfortable.
I’ve never been in a lounge that used fluorescent or LED lighting. Wanting my space to be as cozy as possible, we decided to use Edison bulbs in our overhead lights and table lamps. It keeps my room from feeling too stark and bright. Mostly, however, I use candles as lamps. I especially love the soft glow from candlelight in meditation and my yoga practice.
Play around with the type of lighting that suits you best. Don’t be afraid to use a combination of lighting to personalize your space.
Studies show that spending time in nature can be soothing and healing in many ways. So, why not bring some of that healing inspiration indoors?
Ideas To Create A Peaceful Home Living Space In 2024
I like to focus on creative ways to incorporate the four elements – earth, air, fire and water – into my relaxation space. I think it balances my room, and it helps me focus when I meditate.
Adding plants to my relaxation room has a huge impact on relaxation. Plants are not only beautiful to look at, but bring oxygen to my space. As a new “plant mom” I choose plants based on level of care which means my room is filled with low maintenance plants, like succulents. If you are a more responsible plant parent, you can definitely go wild with your plant selection!
Other favorite ways to incorporate nature into my living room are lighting candles, displaying a mason jar filled with acorns, placing wind chimes in my window, or adding a small water fountain.
Relaxing spaces should be personal to you. My friend, who has her relaxation room in her closet, uses that space for daily prayer and reflection. She decorates her room with inspirational scriptures, prayer lists, pictures of family members and people she cares about. She has created a closet dedicated solely to her spiritual walk and soul healing.
Carving Out A Dedicated Space For Meditation And Yoga
My rest room looks completely different from hers. It’s a large room well-stocked with books I love, craft items and oddities I’ve collected over the years. Each item in my room tells the story of my personal journey. Every object in my room brings me joy in some way. You want items in your space that help shift you to a calm, present mind-set and inspire you.
Electronic devices can be a huge distraction when trying to relax. However, most of us don’t have the luxury of dedicating a room just for meditation and need to use our room for dual purposes. That’s right!
My Zen space also serves as my husband’s game room, complete with television, Xbox and a gaming computer. As long as I turn off all devices when using the room for relaxation, I’m able to disconnect without feeling distracted.
If you have a variety of electronic devices in your room, consider turning off all devices before using your space. You can also make your room a phone-free zone which will remove more distractions.

My favorite thing to do at the end of a long day at work is to come to my break room, light incense and sit in silent meditation. I always choose clay incense to burn when I sit and leave the day.
The smell of earth reminds me of happy memories of hiking in the forest with my father when I was little or with my friends when I was older. In the wild, I don’t care. My phone rarely has service, my backpack is always packed with snacks and the scenery after a hard hike is breathtaking. Breathing in those scents as I meditate quietly takes me back to moments of pure bliss and aids in my relaxation.
Scent is a memory and our sense of smell allows us to have multisensory experiences. These experiences can be relaxing if smells are chosen purposefully and with intention. Using scents I associate with relaxation and grounding allows me to focus on the more important experience of letting go of my stressful day.
“Disorder is the destroyer of rest” – I. Seriously, clutter is the worst, and it’s a reminder of your to-do list. My rest room is always the cleanest room in the house and is completely free of clutter. I keep only essentials in this space or hide non-essentials with clever storage. I have a horizontal cubby on the floor with fabric boxes that house craft items while the open cubbies display my books nicely. Keeping your restroom clean allows you to focus on what’s important.
Creative Ideas To Transform Your Basement
Making room for self-care in my home is one of the best decisions I’ve made in my adult life. As a teacher I am blessed to be able to pour myself into my students and their lives. I have the opportunity to teach them in the classroom, but also to teach them how to be good people.
It’s also often about pouring my whole self into my career. While this makes me a caring teacher, it also robs me of my personal energy that I need for myself and for others in my life outside of the school building.
Having space to recharge, reset, and refill has allowed me to grow in all areas of my life. I recommend that you consider creating a relaxation room in your home.

A meditation room, yoga room, or quiet-time room is a space dedicated to self. Care, a place that closes the door – mentally and physically – to the storm of thoughts that crowd the mind. Soothing design features can support the function of this space, creating a calm and restorative environment.

For its role, the meditation room bears the distinctive characteristics of an asylum. It needs to be a quiet and peaceful place, that is sheltered and feels comfortable.
From a design perspective, a color palette based on organic shapes and grounding hues are ideal for calming the mind. Diffuse lighting follows the interior atmosphere of the space with crafting alternations of bright and dark areas. And the view of nature allows the mind to wander over the landscape, taking in its restored richness and vibrancy.
