If you’re planning a major home renovation that involves multiple rooms and projects, you may be confused about where to start. Should you start in a common area, like the kitchen or living room, to get rid of them? Or is it better to focus on the invisible places so that the communal space remains usable for longer? To determine the best approach, we spoke with experts to find the best path forward for your next home renovation.

Renovating For Comfort And Style

Decide whether you will handle the renovation yourself or hire a professional to do it. “Before starting any renovation, make a detailed plan that includes a timeline, budget, and a list of all the rooms you intend to renovate,” says Austin Fain, CEO and founder of Perfect Steel Solutions. “Consult with a contractor or professional if necessary.”

Home Renovations That Will Increase Your Property Value

If your remodeling plans are on the light side — or if they’re mostly cosmetic (think painting, tile, or flooring) — you might want to try it yourself. If the remodel is larger and requires professional help, your order will usually be dictated by the specialist who will be doing the work. “Renovating your home while continuing to live in it can be a challenging process,” says Fain. “To minimize disruption and maximize comfort, it is essential to plan the order of room renovations carefully.”

Oren Farkash, CEO and owner of Selatan Land Remodeling, says that you should choose your plan of attack based on how comfortable you feel living alongside an ongoing remodel. He recommends dividing the project into parts, choosing a place to start that works for you, and then working your way through adjacent or adjacent spaces—while avoiding the temptation to jump to different areas, which can prolong your renovation project.

Farkash says to start with repairs in the room as your first priority, then move on to cosmetic changes after they are completed. “It’s a good idea to start with your highest priority,” he says, which is usually the kitchen for most homeowners. “In this way, if you are full of money or energy, at least you have the most important area.” This makes choosing your starting point intensely personal—but ultimately, this method will make you the happiest.

“The kitchen is one of the best places to start when remodeling your home,” says Tom Nolan, home improvement expert and founder of AllStar Home. “Kitchen renovations can be incredibly involved, and take longer than other rooms in the house. Starting with the kitchen can also help you quickly return to a sense of normalcy in your home if you’re living there while renovating the place.”

This will probably be the bathroom if you start with the kitchen. Bathrooms and kitchens will be the most intense renovation projects in your home because they involve a lot of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work that often needs to be done at the same time. So, try a more intense project first. “After the kitchen, consider remodeling your bathroom,” says Nolan. “If you have multiple bathrooms in your home, renovate one at a time so you always have access to the toilet and shower. Kitchens and bathrooms are notoriously expensive rooms to renovate, so prioritize these spaces when remodeling your home.”

The kitchen or bathroom is also a high-value room, meaning that if this is the only room you complete, you will likely have increased the value of your home by doing so.

After finishing renovations and improvements in your kitchen and bathroom, you can continue working on your living room. “Renovate your primary living room or family room to create a comfortable space for relaxation and entertaining,” says Fain. “This room can be a temporary gathering place while other renovations are underway.”

Finally, after your kitchen, bathroom, and living room have been remodeled, you can turn your attention to your bedroom. “Your bedroom should be the last place you renovate,” says Nolan. “Maintaining normality throughout the process is essential to reduce stress during the renovation, and having your own bedroom will allow you to sleep and dress as you normally would.”

Home Renovation Trends That Are On Their Way Out, According To Designers

Farkash says you can’t go wrong with an outdoor approach. “Work your way from the inside (like mechanical features on walls and floors) to the outside (think cosmetic finishes),” he says. Once the main elements are finished, you can do things like paint your walls, add new lighting, or replace the hardware in the cabinets.

Keep in mind that the above order is not set in stone. “Keep in mind that these orders may vary depending on your specific circumstances and priorities,” Fain says. “It’s important to communicate with your contractor and consider your family’s needs during the renovation process.”

One of the benefits of hiring a team of professionals for larger multi-trade projects is that they’ll know where to start—and where to go from there. “In the long run, these pros can get these projects done faster, so you don’t have to stay in the renovation workspace any longer than you need to,” says Farkash.

Working together in the wrong order can have disastrous results (which is another reason why hiring a professional team is often advised). Farkash says that you can run the risk of wasting time and money by having to make repairs (especially if your mistakes involve paint or flooring stains). In addition, big mishaps may require the arrival of an expert, anyway. “Working in a methodical way will save you time and money, and you will finish the project faster with a cleaner, better result,” he said.
