House & Home
The equipment, when used correctly, encourages you to carry out tasks in bite-sized pieces, helps you make decisions, and helps you finish each decluttering session with positive steps, without it seeming like a whirlwind entered your home. Look worse, not better.
Below I have highlighted some of the most important types of decluttering equipment, since knowing what these are helps you understand my process for decluttering your home. However, you can also check out this article that lists the top 10 decluttering supplies (which includes a free printable list) if you want to talk more about the supplies needed for the process.
Often, when we decide to get rid of clutter in our home, we want to jump in, head first, take the plunge. While enthusiasm can be great, there is a real concern that you can spend too much time too quickly, leaving your home feeling more chaotic and out of control than when you started.
If you are doing the 365 15-minute daily Declutter mission that I created, and recommend, I recommend that you spend 10 minutes decluttering and 5 minutes cleaning afterward! Using a timer for decluttering is the easiest way to make sure you stick to your allotted time.
Areas In Your Home To Declutter
If you’re going to go with a bigger time (not recommended, because I think 15 minutes per meeting is the sweet spot for decluttering), for every hour you can spend during the meeting schedule for 45 minutes. The 45 minute period is the time you will perform the steps for the declutter method that I have listed below. Then, during the last 15 minutes of the hour you will do your cleaning to get things done and return to the place before the end of the meeting.
You will need several empty cardboard boxes, or garbage bags, or other bags for this process. I recommend using bank-sized boxes, with handles, if possible, so that they are easy to carry and carry around. Another popular idea, at least for items that are not too heavy, is a pop up laundry basket.
Make sure whatever you choose is big enough to hold a fair amount of stuff, but not so big that it’s so full that they’re all but impossible to carry.
I like bank boxes because they have lids which make it harder for you to see what you decide to get rid of, and change your mind. Finally, the fact that they have a lid also allows them to be easily stacked for temporary storage while waiting to donate or sell the item, before you take it out of your house for good.

You can label the boxes or other containers as you like, but I recommend labeling them as follows:
I hesitate to tell you that there are other types that can be useful, because it can easily backfire on you if you are not committed to the decluttering process. That’s the “Not sure” box, which is where you can put items that you can’t decide whether to keep or get rid of.
If you decide to use this box, just do it carefully and don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by the size of the small box before deciding on the items inside.
Finally, the last piece of equipment you need is something to help you get rid of the stuff in your house that no one wants – a trash can. I recommend using black or sturdy black bags, because they won’t rip easily when full, and so you can’t see what you’re throwing away and have second thoughts.

If you already have a recycling center set up in your home, go ahead and make sure any recyclables you find during your shredding session find their way there.
Once you’ve gathered your supplies, you’re ready to begin your first decluttering session. This will be the first of many sessions you will have in your home, with little progress, over time with the steps below.
The first step in the process of decluttering is actually choosing an area of your home to remove clutter from. Here are some, depending on what you have time for that meeting. If you have half an hour to devote (the equivalent of two 15-minute sessions), don’t try to cut your entire house, just a corner of the room, or just a shelf or drawer.
If you don’t know where to start I recommend using my pre-made Declutter 365 plan. Every day I’ve assigned a different 15-minute mission, and you can use it to slow down your house one day at a time! Actually, if you do all the missions, your house will be completely destroyed for a whole year.

Once you have decided the area of your house that you want to declutter in a meeting, set your timer for the time available, minus the amount of time it will take you to clean it afterwards.
Next, put the labeled boxes, trash bags and trash cans so that they are ready to be used during the process, I will explain next.
You need to focus on the small area that you have decided to work during the session, and if you have chosen a larger area, start working systematically, from left to right, clockwise around the room. (Actually the order I listed doesn’t matter, the systematic approach will work, as long as you stick to it.)
Ways To Declutter Your Home Without Turning Minimalist
Take one item at a time and decide on it, before putting it down. There are actually only six options you can create for any given object. You really don’t need a box for the items you’re going to store in the room if you don’t need them, but it helps to have the examples below to know what your options are.
The key to learning how to properly declutter your home is to actually make decisions about each object as you touch them. Your goal should be to touch each object only once during this part of the decluttering session.
While you certainly will, and should, choose to keep some items, make sure you don’t fall into the trap of delusion and think you can keep everything, without getting rid of some things.
There is a reason that in the list of 6 options above, four of them involve getting things out of your home in some form such as donation, sale, trash and recycling. Learn more about how to make decluttering progress, and avoid the trap of shuffling around your clutter here.

When the timer goes off, you are now left with several boxes and bags. If you quit now, things will be worse than before, so make sure you do the cleanup process. It is very important.
First, put back everything that you have decided should be in the room or area that you have just decluttered. If you know these items need to be organized, do it now if you can, but if it takes longer, just put them where they go and come back to that task later.
Next, walk around your house picking up the things you put in boxes that should go somewhere else. To the extent possible, go ahead and put these items in their place. However, if the room it enters is not already barricaded, and there is currently no home for it, place it neatly in a corner to work on when you get to that room.
Third, be sure to put all the garbage and recycle where they go, so they leave your house the next day in the trash or garbage.
Decluttering Tips You Should Pay Attention To
Fourth, make sure you take items to the donation center regularly. Go ahead and put the box in your car now, so the next time you’re passing the donation center you can stop quickly, and take it out.
Finally, the most problematic category is the “Sell” box. Some decluttering experts do not recommend having a “sale” category because there is a tendency that all these things will collect or accumulate over time, in the box, becoming clutter again. They get points.
