Securing Loose Door Handles – I am trying to figure out how to tighten the handle on the front door of a new condo unit. I’ve done a lot of googling and watched some YouTube videos, but they all either have 1) visible screws, 2) a hole that you can press a pin or hex key into, or 3) they’re twist-and-pull Kwikset handles. . My handle doesn’t seem to fit into any of these groups, as it has no visible screws, no holes that I can see, and it’s not a Kwikset handle. Some photos are below. In the 3rd photo, I removed a plate, so the screws are missing.
The “inside” handle (top right/bottom picture) will have a small spring loaded button on the handle post (the part you don’t put your hand on when opening/closing). Use an awl or equivalent tool to press the button and remove the inner handle. Then loosen the inner trim ring (lefty/loosey) to expose the screws that hold the whole assembly together. Tighten them and put them back together.
Securing Loose Door Handles
I had a similar problem with my apartment’s front door and couldn’t find any answers online. So I called the building locksmith who said I should use a knife to (gently) take out the rosette on the inside door, which is the disc that covers the base of the handle. Underneath the rosette there should be a pair of screws that connect the two handles to both sides of the door. The rosette then clicks back onto the base of the handle with the screws in it.

The disc(s? Your pictures seem to show only one side clearly) may be threaded. The outer one should have a “detent” that fits into the face of the door – the inner one does not. When both are tight, the outer one should not be able to turn.
In some cases the inner one is screwed and the outer one is held in place by screws that the inner one covers up. Tighten a loose door knob with hidden chassis screws. It only takes a minute to detach from the cover plate.
Over time, door handles loosen and become difficult to turn and open. The doors used more often in the house are more prone to this.
Wobbly Door Handles
Most door hardware made today uses exposed screws to connect the two halves of the handle to each side of the door. These are accessible from the “side of the room.” If you have exposed screws, you’re in luck – it will be much easier for you to remove the cover plate.
But some current brands (and most older door hardware) use hidden chassis screws, a setup that requires the door knob and cover plate to be removed to tighten the screws . If you know the model of your door handle, you can find the user manual online to provide clear instructions for tightening your specific hardware.
Our door hardware is typical of interior doors, but you can have something other than a button to release the knob. Also, some door trim plates loosen from the chassis by hand (turn them counterclockwise) rather than snapping onto it.
If you see any damaged screws or hardware, replace these pieces to ensure your door handle works properly. If the screws need to be replaced, bring the original screws with you to the hardware store to make sure you buy the right size.

Remove the inner knob by locating the release button, ie the metal tab or wire clip on the side of the knob. Using an awl or small screwdriver, push the button all the way and, at the same time, pull the handle.
Insert a small screwdriver into the small notch in the cover plate and turn it. The plate should be thrown away. Be careful not to chip any paint on the doors.
Tighten the door hardware by opening the door, pressing the two sides of the assembly together and tightening the two screws on the chassis. Inspect it as you tighten it. If the doorknob mechanism is in poor condition, or the screw holes for the screws are stripped and won’t tighten, it may be time to replace the doorknob.
To reassemble, press the cover plate back onto the chassis, press the release button and slide the knob back on until the button pops out of the hole.
Repairing A Loose Door Handle
Most likely, you need to tighten the screws in the handle. The spindle may be loose or worn, which can happen with really old and worn handles. Sometimes all the handle needs is some lubrication for the moving parts.
This can happen when the screws in the handle become loose. Just tighten them with a screwdriver. If the door mechanism was not properly aligned when installed, it can cause the handle to shake.
Look for hidden taps. Some handles have them under plates or caps. The screws can also be found on the bottom or side of the handle. This is common with commercial and older front doors.
